Booking through Thursday – Borrowing

Hosted by Booking Through Thursday
Who would you rather  borrow from? Your library? Or a Friend? (Or don’t your friends trust you to return their books?)

And, DO you return books you borrow?
—————————————————————————————————-
I don’t often borrow books any more. I used to use the library a lot when my hubby and I got our first place together,as there was a library on the corner of our street, about 30 second’s walk from our front door. I was there every few days taking out books and the librarians got to know me and my tastes so well that they would set aside books they thought I would like, as they knew I’d be in either that day or the next!

I rarely borrow books from my friends, but that’s partly because I don’t often get to other people’s houses and I suspect I have more books than most people I know. I do occasionally borrow books from others, and I always return them as quickly as possible and in the same condition in which I received them. I take good care of all my books and do the same with the property of others too.

I only lend my books to a few people, though – ones I know will treat them with respect and will return them (those who do otherwise do not get to borrow books from me again!).

The reason I don’t tend to borrow books very often is that I have such a huge pile of my own books waiting patiently to be read. At present, there are about 60 unread books on my shelf, and as Christmas is next month, I will shortly have at least half a dozen more (probably more like a dozen new books). Back in my library-visiting days, I didn’t keep a pile of unread books of my own, so the library was my main source of reading material. Not so any more!

  1. I’ve started using the library again as I read so many books that I decided to try and save some money again by biorrowing rather than buying.I also get lots from the charity shop, and even our vet sells second hand books in the waiting room for 50p !! My neighbour reads a lot too so we swap books.
I take good care of books too….nothing annoys me more than turned down corners on pages !!Use a bookmark !!!
    Can’t imagine life without books…………..

    • I pick up a lot of my books either second hand or at bargain book stores. I also pass on a lot of books when I’m finished with them, by either giving them to other people, swapping them, selling them on Green Metropolis, or Book Crossing.

Like you, I always take good care to use a bookmark rather than turning the corners of pages down (I can’t stand it when people do that!).

  2. I’m not a big lender either. My friends don’t really read the same books that I do which is good because I worry about what condition it will be when it comes back to me or worse, if I’ll ever see it again.

  3. Nowadays, I mostly buy books. Or prefer to borrow from friends.

    Here is my BTT post!

  4. oops, noone to borrow from, and the last time I lent someone a book/magazine, I never got it back. I was so angry, I don’t greet that person anymore.
I’ve subsrcibed to the Daily Lit, and so has my daughter, thanks so much for telling me about it. 😀

  5. Regarding my post on a blog becoming private, you’re correct, the author/owner has to make it so, so I’m guessing that person no longer wants it public. Oh, well, I’ll just take it off my blog list.
    Thanks for your comment. 🙂

  6. I would rather get my books from the library, and when I do borrow a book from someone , I do make sure I return it.

  7. I am addicted to the library because it’s on my way home from work. It’s SO easy to drop in and grab a couple of books! I have a huge TBR pile, too, but I can’t resist! I’m careful about who I lend books to as well. If it’s something that I really, really loved, I more than likely won’t lend it to anybody! I’d be too afraid of not getting it back.

  8. I’m a huge reader, I do have a rule of 1 book in 1 book out which has been really hard to stick to ( space being an issue ). But his Nibs is currently talking me into getting a Kindle – no more corners turned down / worrying about my book getting damaged in my bag.. etc etc. I do use the Library occasionally but it irritates me if I have to wait for the next book, so normally go and buy it. As for lending books? Only if I know I never want to see it again.
(p.s. loved your commenting rules and hope you don’t mind me popping in unannounced )
